Dear Oregonians,
September 19th is National Voter Registration Day, a perfect opportunity to debut a new public service announcement from the Oregon Elections Division.
Before I share more, please take this opportunity to check your voter registration information. Make sure your name, address and party affiliation (if any) are up to date. Or, if you’ve never been registered to vote, you can do so online today.
Since the 2020 election, false information has had a real impact on our democracy. Frivolous lawsuits and records requests have wasted public resources, death threats and harassment have led election administrators to retire or change careers, and of course we can’t forget the events of January 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol. False information weakens our faith in democracy and could cause voters to stop participating in elections. But there is something we can do about it.
Research shows the best way to fight back is to reach people with positive, accurate messages about elections before they are exposed to false information. This is often called “pre-bunking.” Our successful Voting in Oregon Feels Good campaign did just that, reaching millions of Oregonians in the 2022 election cycle with accessible, engaging messages that undermined the most common false election narratives and promoted participation. Now, as we gear up for the 2024 election cycle, we are excited continue this campaign.
We’ll share our new PSA, Voter Registration, with you on National Voter Registration Day (September 19th). You’ll get a link in your inbox and you will be able to see the video on our social media pages. Here are the links for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Sincerely,
LaVonne Griffin-Valade
Oregon Secretary of State
